Creme Brulee French Toast for 6

Here’s a Christmas morning favorite – our most asked for recipe, decadent, but easy to prepare the night before!

1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter

1 cup packed brown sugar

2 Tablespons corn syrup

1 loaf italian or country style bread

6 large eggs

1-1/2 cups half & half or light cream

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 teaspoon Grand Marnier liquor

1/4 teaspoon salt

In a small, heavy saucepan melt the stick of butter with brown sugar and corn syrup over moderate heat, stirring until smooth, then pour evenly into a 13×9×2” baking dish.

Cut 6 thick slices of bread, trimming the crusts and discarding the ends. Arrange the slices on top of the butter, sugar, corn syrup mixture – squeeze them in slightly to fit if necessary.

In a bowl, whisk together eggs, cream, vanilla, Grand Marnier and salt until well combined. Pour the mixture evenly over the bread slices. Cover with saran wrap and refrigerate overnight (or at least 8 hours).

When ready to bake, heat oven to 350 degrees. Take baking pan out of refrigerator and let it come up to room temperature. Bake bread mixture, uncovered, in the middle of the oven until puffed and the edges are golden – about 30 minutes. Serve immediately.

Very rich – no other syrup or topping needed! Tasty served with a bunch of fresh grapes on the side and a slice or two of bacon.

Sift together:

2 cups flour

2 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ginger

1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

1/4 teaspoon salt

Mix in a large mixing bowl:

1/2 cup canola oil

1 cup sugar

Stir in 1/4 cup molasses

1 large egg, slightly beaten.

Add the dry ingredients to the mixing bowl in several batches and mix well.

Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate several hours.

Dip one side of each dough ball into coarse sugar (sometimes sold as “sparkling white sugar” in gourmet shops) and arrange, sugar side up, on greased cookie sheets. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until they are puffed and cracked on top. Transfer to wire rack to cool.
